Event description

Description

Dates: September 7 - September 28

Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Place: Frassati Room (North side of the big building)

Our Catholic faith is often counter-cultural. Some of the most misunderstood and disputed beliefs are those surrounding the dignity of human life – contraception, abortion, in vitro fertilization, cloning, stem cell treatments, assisted suicide, Living Wills, euthanasia, etc.

Must we preserve life in all cases and all conditions? What sorts of biotechnologies may Catholics utilize in cases of infertility or when serious illness may be contracted? How does one die with dignity? Will I be hooked up to all kinds of machines and tubes?

These are questions that permeate our culture and impact family discussions and decisions. These are questions to which our faith gives answers – answers that inspire hope and a deeper appreciation for the gift of life.

Grounded in the consistent teachings on the sanctity of life, this 4-week study will explain the foundational moral principles that guide our decision-making on specific medical treatments and the Church’s position on each of the life issues.

Books needed for this study:

Required: Pope John Paul II, Encyclical Letter, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), 1995. You can download it from the Vatican website, but it's very lengthy.

Optional: Smith, J. & Kaczor, C. Life Issues, Medical Choices: Questions and Answers for Catholics. Cincinnati, OH: Servant Books, 2007.

Any questions, please contact Tom Perna, Director of Adult Evangelization and Catechesis at tom@smarymag.org or 480-279-6737.
