Executive Director Letter of Invitation to Awards Banquet
Time is running out. Register today!
As we invite you to our virtual 19th Annual Human Rights Awards on Saturday, December 11, 2021, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM (Zoom Link Here), we want to make three things really clear:
1. Human Agenda is working tirelessly to meet the needs of workers, families, and the planet.
2. We focus our organizing and policy advocacy primarily on the most vulnerable, but with polarized politics, the pandemic, and the state of the planet, we are all vulnerable.
3. Human Agenda needs your support to continue its work.
Human Agenda has been a leader in fighting for Build Back Better, the $3.5 trillion Senate Budget bill passed as a resolution in both houses of Congress. The bill pledged many of the human rights that Human Agenda has fought for since its inception. Paid family leave. Fining union-busting law firms. Affordable housing. Free pre-K. Free community colleges. Expansion of MediCare for seniors. Negotiating drug prices. Low-cost childcare. The child tax credit. A pathway to citizenship. And hundreds of billions of dollars to save our planet.
While Build Back Better has absorbed the time and resources of board members and staff this fall, Human Agenda in 2021 has also successfully
• Assisted scores of undocumented immigrants in removal proceedings or subject to ICE arrest through its legal collective CLARO. State and county funding for removal defense and the Rapid Response Network is our only stable funding.
• Worked with Working Partnerships USA (WPUSA), Pilipino Association of Workers and Immigrants (PAWIS) and Community Solutions to improve vaccination rates in South County and the fight against wage theft.
• Finalized operating agreements for two worker-owned cooperatives where the members democratically control their own businesses, receive the profits, and create equity: Up and Up Moving and Storage LLC and Alma Premium Care LLC.
• Held three Break the Mold Conferences supporting nine democratic and equitable alternatives to our current economic and political system-- from public banking, food security, and land trusts to worker-owned cooperatives, Medicare for All, and participatory democracy.
• Gave presentations on vision, values, a theory of change, participatory democracy, immigrant rights, and Build Back Better.
• Joined rallies in support of workers (May Day), immigrants (Rally for DACA), and oppressed peoples in resource-limited countries, including Haiti.
• Engaged in extensive policy advocacy, e.g. supporting the Berryessa Flea Market vendors, AB 1177 (the California Public Banking Option Act), AB 257 (support for fast food workers), AB 1400 (CalCare), AB 221 (emergency food assistance), AB 655 (screening law enforcement officers to prevent hate and violence), a $36.5M fund for outreach and loans for worker ownership options, the inclusion of caste in the county anti-discrimination policy, and the Dismantling Global Hindutva conference.
• Supported climate justice, including closure of the Reid-Hillview Airport, opposition to the “Breeze of Innovation”, co-sponsorship of a Smart Yards Cooperative presentation on permaculture principles, and support for the inclusion of more stakeholders in the San Jose Community Forest Management Plan.
• Convened Coop Meetup meetings, organized CUBA SI to obtain accurate information about Cuba, and observed the Mexican mid-term elections in the State of Nayarit.
• Totally revamped our accounting system to become accrual based and more accountable.
• Delivered monthly e-letters to our base of supporters.
For the first year in many, because of the pandemic, Human Agenda did not organize an Emulation Tour in 2021. However, such trips to Finland (“the happiest country on earth”), Spain (the exemplary Mondragon Cooperatives) and Cuba (the highest literacy and vaccination rates in Latin America) will be planned in 2022, along with an exploratory trip to Bhutan (the home of Gross National Happiness).
Please join us for our annual awards and fundraiser on December 11 as we celebrate International Human Rights Day with keynote speakers Alex Lee and Maria Maldonado, deserving DECKS awardees, and inspiration from Mary Celestin.
We could not do this work without your support.
