Description

Hula for Heart – A six-week introductory workshop

Experience the meaning of Aloha as you learn the dance of Hawaiʻi, the hula. In this six-week workshop, we will learn basic steps, form and technique, and choreographed dances to three songs in both ancient-style and modern-style hula. We will discover some of the history, culture, and language too, for the hula is not just a dance – it is a cultural experience.

Class Syllabus

Week 1 – October 2

  • Introductions
  • Brief discussion: What is hula? Why is it important to learn the language, culture, and history when we dance the hula? Explain the two different styles of hula
  • Hula basics (form & technique)
  • Word of the week: Akahai – modest, gentle, unassuming
  • Basic steps (kāholo, hela, kaʻō, hela, lele, directionals)
  • Mele: Song of Old Hawaiʻi

Week 2 – October 9

  • Warm up
  • Word of the week: Lōkahi – unity, harmony, agreement
  • Review steps
  • Basic steps (kaʻapuni, aoʻapuni, hoʻoholo)
  • Mele: Song of Old Hawaiʻi

Week 3 – October 16

  • Warm up
  • Word of the week: ʻOluʻolu – pleasant, nice, amiable
  • Review steps
  • Basic steps (ʻuwehe, lele ʻuwehe, step, brush ʻuwehe)
  • Mele: Hiʻilawe

Week 4 – October 23

  • Warm up
  • Word of the week: Haʻahaʻa – humble, humility
  • Review steps
  • Basic steps (ʻami, ʻami kūkū, ʻami ʻoniu, ʻao ʻao)
  • Mele: Hiʻilawe

Week 5 – October 30

  • Warm up

  • Review steps

Week 6 – November 6

Please bring water and wear comfortable workout clothes. You may also bring a pareo/sarong to wrap around your waist. Hula is done barefoot, so no special shoes are required, although if you have foot issues, you may wear shoes. You will receive handouts with material covered in class, as well as a CD with music to practice.

Cassie has studied hula for four years and has been teaching for two years. Journey with her into the beautiful world of hula this fall!
