Afro-Peruvian Fest presents: Huellas
The first Afro-Peruvian festival held in the San Francisco Bay Area, Afro-Peruvian Fest is an annual event that takes place every June with the aim of celebrating Afro-Peruvian culture month and bringing together local SF Bay Area and California based artists and culture bearers while creates a bridge with other Afro-Peruvian culture bearers based in Peru. This year, our 4th annual festival is opening with a performance of Huellas by Cunamacué.
Huellas (Footprints) is an Afro-Peruvian dance, music and theater performance inspired by the ancestral dance Son de los Diablos. We will share its story of decolonization and resistance and we'll share other Afro-Peruvian rhythms in support of connecting to ancestral memory including the Festejo, Zapateo, and Landó.
Huellas centers around Afro-Peruvian rhythms and dances to bring visibility to the African Diaspora in Latinx communities. Our project highlights the importance, history, existence, and cultural contributions of people of African ancestry in Peru as a way to reclaim and remember a history that is often invisibilized.
Co-created and performed by Carmen Roman and Pierr Padilla Vasquez
Musicians: Holly Shogbesan, Kyla Danysh, Randella Jones.
