A discussion on how courses, grades, study habits, learning skills and work ethic will have an impact on the type of high school and college student you will be.

Selecting a Major: What do I want to do, who do I want to be?
For grades 9th and 10th, Meeting Room 2
Facilitators: Orville Abrahams and Anzala Alozie, YMCA
Discussion on how hobbies and interests can help determine what college program you choose and what career path you take.

Next Steps: High School graduation to new student orientation

Discussion on preparing seniors for the mental and emotional transformation for what can be a time of anxiety, insecurities, peer and parental pressures

Everything you need to know about the college admission process, Section 2

Discussion on the admission process and procedures, fiscal planning, types of financial aid, loans, scholarships; deadlines on when to apply, income criteria, and alternate payment plans (lines of credit). Providing a conducive learning environment.

Student Life

Discussion on the importance of extra-curricular activities, athletics, volunteering, leadership development and character education.

Taking the Right (and Required) Courses, Earning the Grade
For grades 9th and 10th, Meeting Room 2
Facilitator: Kim Baker, Albany High School, Guidance Office and Peter Sawyer, HVCC Department Chairperson, History, Philosophy and Humanities (with possibly 2 students)
Discussion on course work and grades required for acceptance in chosen field of study, and what are alternative academic programs, and admission processes.

The Process
Grades 11th and 12th, Meeting Room 3
Facilitator: Jessica Pugliese, HVCC Admission Counselor
Discussion on completing the admission application, important deadlines and all required documentation needed to complete an application. Information will be offered on requirements for degree programs.

Transitioning to College
Grades 12th, College Accepted Students (Any College), BTC-203
Facilitator: Larry Ellis, HVCC, Associate Director, Counseling & Wellness Center
Discussion on understanding your expectations, responsibilities, academic definitions, self-advocacy, and navigating the educational hierarchy for students.

Discussion on degrees and/or certificate programs for parents looking to begin and/or resume educational pursuits to develop and/or enhance career skills, job placement, promotion, and marketability.

Discussion on the inter-collegiate athletic opportunities available, maintaining eligibility, and competing at the next level: academically and athletically.
