About This Workshop

Who's it for?

If you're a web designer looking to improve your prototyping, or a developer interested in the advantages of the new APIs, this class is for you. This one-day workshop is ideal for web designers and developers who are comfortable wrangling HTML and CSS, and are ready to see what the new specifications have to offer. It's helpful, but not necessary, to have some familiarity with JavaScript.

What you'll learn:

Attendees of this full-day workshop will receive a step-by-step introduction to using HTML today. The class starts off with a brief overview of HTML and CSS, then moves quickly into new HTML5 elements and techniques. Later the class discusses interactivity with JavaScript, jQuery, and the new HTML5 APIs. Over the course of the day, attendees will apply their newly learned skills in workshops, learn how to use these technologies together and leave with rich knowledge of modern web development.

Course Outline:

The class runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes morning refreshments and lunch.

  • Introduction
  • HTML primer
  • CSS primer
  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • Introduction to JavaScript and jQuery

Preparation

Attendees should bring a laptop with WiFi and a power cord, ready with a code editor and and browser. We strongly recommend the Google Chrome browser.

We also recommend one of the following text editors for Mac: Sublime Text 2, TextMate, MacVim, Coda or Windows: E TextEditor, Notepad++, UltraEdit, but the most important thing is that attendees use a text editor they're comfortable with.

About the Instructor

Greg Smith is a senior web developer at Bocoup with a knack for making and porting HTML5 games. Greg has contributed several tools for web game development including boxbox, an intuitive framework for the box2d physics engine, and LetterBrush, a text editor for drawing.

Hotel and Parking Information

A corporate rate has been established at the nearby Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel for Bocoup guests. You can secure the discounted nightly rate through this link, or by calling 1-800-MARRIOTT and asking for the Bocoup rate.

For our local guests who will be commuting in, The Bocoup Loft is a short walk from Red and Silver line access at South Station. There are also a number of paid parking lots and garages located along Congress St. and A St. which range in price from $11 to $15 per day.
