HSCP - Safeguarding in the context of Social Media and Technology

Course Overview

There is no denying most children and young people communicate these days ‘on-line’. Do you feel confident in understanding this environment and being able to recognise and act on safeguarding risks?

You asked for and we provided this half-day course which will undoubtedly raise awareness of safeguarding children and young people around the issues of social media and technology, developing awareness of the potential for exploitation and abuse and explore prevention and intervention strategies.

Audience

This course is for all HSCB Partners. This course is suitable for staff groups 3 and above as defined by the HSCB learning and development policy.

Course pre-requisites (none)

Learning outcomes

•Develop an understanding of safeguarding in the context of children’s lives and their use of social media.

•Identify those children at potential risk of harm and any associated warning signs.

•Explore a range of Applications currently used by children.

•Develop an enhanced awareness of how children can be exploited and / or abused online, including the tactics and technology used by perpetrators.

•Develop your ability to support children in staying safe online, formulating prevention and intervention strategies with children and their families (e.g. a social media safety plan).

•Explore the role of parents/carers in keeping children safe online, including the importance of consent when posting content and images (sharenting)

•Explore the dangers of online multi-player gaming

•Understand the risks of sharing inappropriate images (sexting)

•Explore cyber-bullying and develop an understanding of what to look for and how to respond

•Develop the ability of front-line professionals to manage incidents of online exploitation and abuse through reference to local processes and procedures

•Ensure professionals are aware of the compulsive use of technology and its effects on children

The Hampshire’s Safeguarding Children’s Board (HSCB) would like to seek your feedback on its learning and training events. To be able to do this, we need your permission (your consent) to be able to store and use any contact details you provide to us. Although you may say yes now, you can withdraw your consent at any time.

We will store your information within the Eventbrite application until we have issued a post-event survey, at which point, if we have not heard from you since you originally agreed to us contacting you, we will delete your contact details.

We will not share your information with anybody unless the law requires it.

To ensure that HSCP’s learning programme is effective in strengthening front-line practice, we may contact you at the three-month and six-month points following the event. By confirming a booking, you are giving your consent for us to contact you for this purpose.
