HR101: Deep Dive for Start-Ups and Smalls

Start-ups and small employers may feel at a disadvantage when compared to large organizations, but there are ways to compete effectively, even in the areas of HR management. This session will identify some of the elements that will help start-ups and smalls move from operating on a 'wing and a prayer' to 'soaring high'!

Elements to be discussed:

  • Competing for Great People - Planning, acquiring and retaining talent is one of the crucial functions of any employer, whether you only need one employee or dozens of employees. Large employers may have more resources at their disposal, but start-ups and smalls can be nimble, flexible and innovative - traits that can draw in top talent to your organization! As a small employer, learn these strategies and tactics for building a team of people wo will not only meet your customer's expectations, but surpass your own. From determining what you need for skills to evaluating a candidate sitting in front of you, and from assessing performance to motivating your team, there is a lot to learn!

  • Complying with Employment Laws & Court Decisions - You want your organization to be well known - just not by the government, right? And not for the wrong reasons. Employment laws are in place to make sure people get a fair shake and a square deal. They may seem oppressive to an employer just starting out, but they are important! Think of employment regulations as government established 'minimum daily requirements'! They set the rules you must follow if you are going to employee people. We will identify the top few regulations you need to be critically aware of, and give you a resource to stay on top of changing regulations.

  • Creating an Enviornment of Excellence - So even if you have the players in place, and you know the rules of the game, you still need a game plan. Your game plan, your style of leadership, your response to obstacles, your interactions with your team all work to create an environment that either pleases people and draws them in or repels people and drives them out. We will give you ways to assess how your people view your culture, how your actions change the environment, and how you can begin to create an environment of excellence, productivity, and engagement on a regular basis.
