The health and welfare of our children, families and communities is severely impacted by violence. There is increasing evidence of the profoundly harmful effects of violence on child development, the long-term health of affected populations, and the economic development of entire communities, especially communities of color. Increasingly, children are being exposed to violence in the schools, communities are terrorized by senseless violence and families are continuing to hide violence in the home. This produces a toxic environment for development of healthy relationships, school performance and stress. As mental health professionals, we are charged with preventing violence through addressing the known factors that increase or decrease the likelihood of violence.

In 2018 the American Public Health Association (APHA) issued a policy statement that recognizes violence as a public health crisis. It is founded on an understanding of violent behavior as arising from contextual, biological, environmental, systemic and social stressors. This conference provides a holistic view of violence from trauma informed practice and other Person in Environment (PIE) contributors. It will focus on the impact of violence on the micro, mezzo and macro levels of practice. Participants will learn about policies that impact violence, current research, community mobilization and how to best serve those who have been impacted by community violence, gun violence and interpersonal violence.

Objectives:

1. Understand the impact of violence on our families and communities

2. Develop strategies to combat the negative implications of violence

3. Understand violence from micro, mezzo and macro levels of intervention.

Public Transportation:

The Metro Station for the Howard University School of Law is Van Ness/UDC, which is on the Red Line.

Follow the exit to the right hand side Connecticut Avenue. Follow Connecticut Avenue to Van Ness Street proceed left. Bank of America is on the corner. Follow Van Ness to the end of the street. As you walk down the street you will see that Van Ness has a number of apartment buildings on both sides of the street. At the end of Van Ness, there is a circle.
