Description

Blogs, Facebook, Self-publishing: everyone’s a writer now. But how many can really write well and – even better – make a living from it? In this full-day course, presented by Frieze Academy, frieze co-editor Dan Fox, frieze Associate Editor Evan Moffitt and guest speaker Chris Wiley will give their insights into writing about art for journalists, critics, bloggers or anyone interested in getting practical and inspiring advice, with additional reference to writing about art for an international readership.

Subjects will include:

  • Who are you writing for?
  • The different styles of art criticism
  • Practical advice on becoming an art writer, from how to pitch, to what you can expect from the editing process and how much you should be paid

Tickets include lunch. Doors open at 10am and close at 5.30pm.

Dan Fox is a writer, editor and filmmaker based in New York. Since 1999 he has worked as, variously: intern, assistant editor, associate editor, senior editor and then co-editor of frieze magazine, and is now editorial director of video at frieze. He has contributed to a wide range of artist publications and exhibition catalogues, and his book 'Pretentiousness; Why It Matters' was published last year by Fitzcarraldo Editions (UK) and Coffee House Press (USA).

Evan Moffitt is a New York-based writer, critic and the assistant editor of frieze. His work has appeared in such publications as Apollo, Art in America, Flash Art, The Miami Rail and San Francisco Arts Quarterly. He has lectured and participated in talks at UCLA, the Hammer Museum, ICA Miami, and the International Center for Photography, among others. Previously he served as Associate Editor for PARIS, LA, Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Review of Books.

Chris Wiley is an artist and writer. He is a contributing editor of frieze. Wiley recently acted as an advisor and catalogue writer for ‘The Encyclopedic Palace’ at the 55th Venice Biennale. A show featuring his work will open at PS1 MoMA, New York, in March.
