Description

Blogs, Facebook, Self-publishing: everyone’s a writer now. But how many can really write well and – even better – make a living from it? In this full-day course, presented by Frieze Academy, frieze Associate Editor Pablo Larios and guest speaker Jan Verwoert will give their insights into writing about art for journalists, critics, bloggers or anyone interested in getting practical and inspiring advice, with additional reference to writing about art for an international, English readership.

Subjects will include:

  • Who are you writing for?
  • The different styles of art criticism
  • Practical advice on becoming an art writer, from how to pitch, to what you can expect from the editing process and how much you should be paid
  • Writing for English- and German-language publications

Tickets include lunch. Doors open at 10am and close at 5.30pm.

Pablo Larios is Associate Editor at frieze. Aside from numerous texts on artists, exhibition reviews and catalogue texts, he authored the artists' texts for the 9th Berlin Biennale (2016) and the guidebook for the 15th Istanbul Biennial (2017). He is editor of two artists' monographs on Slavs and Tatars and on Philipp Fehr and Henning Rühr, both forthcoming with Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König.

Jan Verwoert is a Berlin-based art critic and cultural theorist. He is professor at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and teaches at the Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam. He is also contributing editor for frieze magazine.

Frieze offers a number of complimentary bursary places on this course for the unwaged, students, pensioners, artists or anyone else who feels they cannot afford the fee. If you would like to apply, please send a paragraph explaining why you believe you qualify and why this specific course is of interest to academy@frieze.com.
