Event description
For Lower Sixth students to get a head start on writing their personal statements.

About this Event

Places are restricted to 8 students to allow for a fully tailored session and maximum results.

Often seen as the most challenging aspect of the university application process, the UCAS personal statement is an opportunity for students to market themselves, but in only 4000 characters. This can seem like an Everest-style challenge.

There is no magic formula for this highly academic document but in this engaging workshop we help students understand what admissions tutors are looking for.

Our guest speaker, Sarah Alakija is an Education Adviser specialising in University Admissions. She is an expert adviser on all aspects of applying to university, working with students on an individual basis as well as giving workshops and presentations in schools.

Students will look at:

• The type of content needed to evidence their interest in their chosen degree subject, as well as how to plan the content and present it in a logical order to best engage the admissions tutors.

• Using excerpts from real personal statements, we look at examples of the great and the not-so-great in order to inspire students.

Students will leave with:

• A clearer understanding of their own personal statement content and an action plan for an organised structure for their UCAS personal statement.

• Confidence and excitement about what to do next!

Guest speaker: Sarah has provided UCAS application support in Sixth Forms since 1997. She is currently Head of Higher Education and Careers at Putney High School and consults for UK independent schools (HMC Schools) and an independent school in China, on their Careers and Oxbridge application guidance.

As a long-term mentor, Sarah also works more closely with a smaller number of students who need additional guidance with university applications. Sarah has worked in independent schools for over 20 years and has previously worked as a Deputy Headteacher.
