How to Wrestle an 800-pound Gorilla: Electric Utilities in the Era of Solar

Seminar: Vincent Battaglia (Founder, Renova Energy)

Event information:

Seminar Abstract:

In the eyes of electric utilities, every person, business and non-profit that goes solar is a lost customer. Rather than accept their eventual role as simply maintaining the grid, and moving away from energy generation as a profit center, they are doing everything in their power to put barriers into place through any means possible, from legislation to policies that pertain to the actual installation at homes.

Industry groups, nonprofits, states, cities, companies and individuals continue to fight back in order to ensure that the choice to move to clean, renewable energy is available to everyone.

We’ll take a look at this fight, specifically the ones happening in California with Southern California Edison, an investor-owned utility, and Imperial Irrigation District, a municipally-run utility, to understand the differences and the ways each type is resisting the inevitable.

Speaker Bio:

Vincent Battaglia, MBA, founded Renova Energy Corporation in 2006 as envisioned in his Master’s Thesis at UCR. Now the largest local solar and battery storage company in the Coachella Valley, Renova boasts 160 employee owners, three buildings, and gross annual revenues of approximately $40M.

Renova is a SunPower Elite Dealer and a Certified Installer for Tesla Powerwall, and was the first company in the country to be accredited by NABCEP in 2012. Vincent is also the author of the book “Cut the Cord: How to Achieve Energy Independence by Joining the Solar-Powered Microgrid Revolution.”
