Event description

Description

Abortion is regularly discussed in the media – whether it’s the US Administration's latest stance on reproductive rights, or a character in a soap opera struggling with a difficult pregnancy decision. There’s a lot of ‘noise’ about abortion but how can we be sure that the information out there is accurate, and non-stigmatising? After all, a third of women in the UK have an abortion. How do we get behind the sensationalist headlines to see the realities?

This workshop, hosted by IPPF, an international provider of abortion services and advocate for reproductive health and rights, looks at how we can communicate on a ‘sensitive subject’ like abortion accurately and without stigmatising the millions of people around the world who make decisions to end pregnancies.

The workshop will provide factual information on abortion, and look at how stigma can affect those who have abortions, as well as those who provide abortion services. We will examine the language and imagery used to communicate on abortion, and looks at whose stories are and aren’t told. The workshop will engage NGO staff, activists, educators, and journalists to look at positive solutions to fighting abortion stigma in our different communities. Please note that this workshop is designed for those who do not already have extensive knowledge of abortion!
