Presenters

Linda LeDuc has a nursing background; she has spent most of her career working in the non-profit sector, with over 20 years specifically in the field of Alzheimer's and dementia. Linda's specialty is the development of education tools and programs; developing meaningful and helpful support for those living with disease and those who care for them.

Jennifer Hall is a wife, mother of two, grandmother of a 6 month old Molly, real estate agent and care partner of her husband, Tom to whom she has been married for 38 years. Tom was 51 when he began to have symptoms and was officially diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease in 2003 when he was 53 years old. Tom has been in a long term care home for 6 years and is in the latter stages of the disease.

Summary

Families caring for people with dementia often must move the person from their care to the care of others via a long-term care home. This decision is seldom an easy one; the day itself is often described by care partners as the worst day of their lives.

This session will examine what is in the “invisible suitcase” brought on move day by the person, their caregiver and family members. With the "invisible suitcase” in mind, we will explore how staff can provide support, with the goal of making the experience better for everyone.
