Event description

Description

Starting a business is hard work but attending office hours with Professor Jeff Longshaw can get you on the right path. People who attend these office hours will work with Professor Longshaw to determine what the best roadmap is for startup success and have a clearer vision of what their next steps are.

Jeff Longshaw teaches one of the most unique classes in the Mihaylo School of Business and Economics at CSUF. Although called Starting your Own Professional Practice/Small Business it is really Entrepreneurism for Non-Business Majors. The course was originally envisioned by the CSUF Health Science and Communications Deans for graduating seniors and graduate students who wanted support starting their own business. Professor Longshaw and Mihaylo Center for Entrepreneurship Director John Bradley Jackson designed the course and Professor Longshaw has taught it to over 100 students in the past three years. The course is of particular interest to international students who, like the CSUF students in the class, have a wide range of backgrounds including engineering, prelaw, communications, gerontology, psychology, art and others.

The basis of Professor Longshaw’s course is using student teams for understanding and building a successful start-up business. Topics include validating concepts, developing a business plan, how to organize and read financials, identifying funding and how to pitch to potential investors. The course provides the business side of successfully going out there on your own, and is directly applicable to aspiring individuals who bring their ideas and concepts for friendly advising and useful recommendations.

For over 24 years, Professor Jeff Longshaw, MBA, MSBA, has been a business management and communication consultant, teaching proposal writing and composition to companies to improve their win rate. While he has managed and participated in over 20 large-scale proposals for Westinghouse, Lockheed, Bath Ironworks, General Dynamics and others, he has also produced numerous business plans for start-up companies.

Professor Longshaw has taught at UCLA, CSDH, and in the CSUF Communications Department. Jeff Longshaw holds a Masters in Entrepreneurship from USC’s Marshall School of Business as well as an MBA. He is a member of the national business honor fraternity Beta Gamma Sigma. He supports the Board of the CSUF Startup Incubator and helps write and edit the Incubator’s quarterly report called the Insider.

To make an appointment, please click the registration button above and pick the half hour timeslot that works best for you. If you are new to entrepreneurship and have a lot of questions, you may select two half hour timeslots. Please cancel or reschedule with a 24 hour notice so that others may claim that time spot.

(One note of caution: Help provided during office hours is limited to the time available during office hours and to get the best results out of this time we strongly recommend that you have a more permanent mentor, like the ones that are attached to our Residents at the CSUF Startup Incubator.)
