Starter Company Plus – Small Business Program The Starter Company Plus – Small Business Program is focused on helping entrepreneurs start or grow traditional small businesses (i.e. trades, consulting, retail, etc.). If you are an entrepreneur planning to open or grow your traditional small business, the Starter Company Plus – Small Business Program can provide the following support: • A grant of up to $3,500 to assist in starting or growing your small business • One-on-one business advisory services and mentoring • Co-working space with access to computers, internet and meeting rooms Program Requirements To qualify for the grant portion of this program you must have successfully completed the 10-course Starter Company Plus – Small Business Training Program and be: • 18 years of age or older at the time of application • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident • A Toronto resident or operating your business in Toronto • Not working full-time • Not in a full-time education program or returning to school • Not enrolled in other Provincial employment or self-employment related programs that include or do not include financial assistance Training Program Overview To qualify for the Starter Company Plus – Small Business grant, applicants must first attend the 10-course training session and complete a Business Plan. The training courses are half-day sessions and cover the following learning objectives: • How to develop a business model and plan • How to do market research • How to prepare a marketing plan • Low cost, no cost marketing tools • How to market your business online • How to keep books and basic bookkeeping • How to prepare a profit and loss statement • How to calculate your break-even point • How to prepare a cash flow forecast • How to analyze a balance sheet • Legal requirements for small business • Costing and pricing your product or service • Time management tips and tools • Sales skills and customers service • How to apply for a business loan • How to use systems to improve your management • How to keep yourself motivated and disciplined • What it takes to become a successful business • How to work smarter, not harder • How to manage your employees Training Dates The program is delivered on the following dates and times. To be eligible for the $3,500 grant applicants must attend all of 10-courses and complete a Business Plan. Wednesday, August 2nd - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, August 7th - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 16th - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 23rd - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 30th - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is an accelerated course program that combines 2-courses into each day. Once you have completed the training program, you will be eligible to apply for the Starter Company Plus - Digital Main Street grant. The grant funding must be used to support the launch or growth of your business. Completing the training program does not ensure you will receive the grant, as each applicant's Business Plans is scored to ensure it complies with the program requirements and presents a viable business. Program Overview

The How To Run Your Business Program is focused on helping clients develop their business ideas and growth plans – so whether you’re starting out, looking to refine your operations, or plan for expansion, the How To Run Your Business Program has the tools you need.

The program includes a number of elements, including:

  • A ten-course training program focused on developing all elements of your business;
  • Access to one-on-one advisory support after completing the training program;
  • Connections with mentors for coaching, advice and inspiration; and,
  • Ability to work from Enterprise Toronto’s North York Civic Centre Office for up to six- months (includes touchdown space, wifi and meeting space).

The program is sector agnostic and is focused on helping entrepreneurs that are ready to take their business idea, or existing business, to the next level.

Program Element Overview

The following provides a detailed overview of the program elements and how they are delivered:

Training Program

The training program is a step-by-step course designed for people who want to learn more than just how to complete a business plan, but how to use it. Program participants will learn the following:

  • How to develop a business model and plan
  • How to do market research
  • How to prepare a marketing plan
  • Low cost, no cost marketing tools
  • How to market your business online
  • How to keep books and basic bookkeeping
  • How to prepare a profit and loss statement
  • How to calculate your break-even point
  • How to prepare a cash flow forecast
  • How to analyze a balance sheet
  • Legal requirements for small business
  • Costing and pricing your product or service
  • Time management tips and tools
  • Sales skills and customers service
  • How to apply for a business loan

The training sessions will be delivered over ten or five weeks (accelerated program).

Clients will have access to a 150-page Small Business Training Manual, business tools and templates.

Advisory Services

At the beginning of the program each client will be assigned an Enterprise Toronto Small Business Advisor. That advisor will be available to continue working with the client throughout the program and after the training sessions.

Mentorship Access

All clients will gain access to the Startup Here Toronto Café mentoring platform. Prior to access to the platform, clients will complete a mentee onboarding session delivered by Enterprise Toronto.

StarterSpace @North York

All clients will have the ability to work from Enterprise Toronto’s North York Civic Centre’s officenamed StarterSpace @North York. Access to the space will include touchdown office space based on a first-come-first-served basis during business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), access to wifi and boardrooms that can be booked for meetings.

Training Dates

The program is delivered on the following dates and times. To be eligible for the $3,500 grant applicants must attend all of 10-courses and complete a Business Plan.

  • Monday November 6th - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Monday, November 13- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Monday November 20th- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Monday, November 27th - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Monday December 4th - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is an accelerated course program that combines 2-courses into each day.
