PARENT EDUCATION WORKSHOPS: For Parents and Caregivers

"Is it Real Doctor?": How to Respond to your Child's Gender Non-Conforming Behavior in a Rapidly Changing Culture

When your 13-year-old announces that he is “non-binary,” and wants “they” as their pronouns, how should you respond? When your 2-year-old -- who in your mind is of course a girl because she has a vagina -- says, “No! Me a boy!” is she confused, or transgender ? Should you let your 17-year-old change pronouns ? Take feminizing or masculinizing hormones? Aren’t you only encouraging your child to become transgender if you allow cross-gender behavior and dress? How do you know if it’s only a phase? Isn’t it dangerous to be transgender? If your girl can wear pants and study physics and play soccer, why does she need to “be” a boy?
In this workshop we will unpack the complex and challenging task of supporting your gender non-conforming child or teen in light of current research, long-established principles of child development and parenting, and your enduring love for your child.

Susanna Moore, PhD, has worked with a diverse range of children and adolescents in the East Bay since 1999, including adolescents in foster care and Spanish-speaking immigrant families. She wrote her award-winning dissertation about gender non-conforming youngsters in 2002, drawn to the topic because her own tomboy childhood included gender-related joy and pain. Children and teens with gender identity issues now comprise more than half of her private practice, including many referred through Kaiser-Permanente’s Multi-Specialty Transitions clinic.
