Event description
Learn from industry experts on how to overcome the hurdle from pitching your work to actually getting it published

About this Event

You’ve written a captivating manuscript? Great, now you have to sell it. Publishing is a business, and convincing a publisher to take a chance on your first or second book can be challenging, especially in an industry that has seen many cutbacks and consolidation. Join this workshop to hear tips from publishers. You will have the opportunity to talk to them about your project and ask the questions one-on-one necessary to help your manuscript avoid the dreaded slush pile.

Speakers include Karmen Wells (Shelf Made Creative), Catharina de Bakker (Great Plains), Janie Yoon (House of Anansi Press) and Meg Wheeler (Westwood Creative Artists).

Karmen Wells is an editor working on manuscripts and screenplays through her company Shelf Made Creative. Prior to this, she was the Assistant Editor at HarperCollins Canada in Toronto where she championed and edited many talented authors. Karmen had an unconventional way into the publishing industry with a BA in Political Studies from the University of Winnipeg and an MA in Journalism from Western University in London, Ontario. After deciding not to pursue either degree, she took courses in the Publishing Certificate at Ryerson University and completed two internships within Penguin Random House Canada. She also spent time editing for a literary agent in Toronto and as a bookseller, so she has experience in just about every stage of a books' process.

Catharina de Bakker is the Editorial Director of Great Plains Publications, a Winnipeg-based small press that publishes a range of genres, including regional history, memoir, short story collections, literary novels, and young adult fiction. An avid reader who loves a great story and a unique voice, she enjoys collaborating with emerging and established writers and guiding their projects from idea to finished book.

Janie Yoon is the Associate Publisher of House of Anansi Press. She has worked with award-winning and bestselling Canadian authors such as Tanya Talaga, Patrick deWitt, Ins Choi, Elizabeth Renzetti, Jordan Tannahill, Harold R. Johnson, and Teva Harrison. She is also the editor of the CBC Massey Lectures and acquires for the international list, most recently the critically acclaimed bestseller No Friend but the Mountains by Behrouz Boochani, the Kurdish-Iranian journalist who has been detained indefinitely on Manus Island at one of Australia’s offshore detention centres for refugees.

Meg Wheeler is the Associate Agent and the International Rights Director and Associate Agent, Westwood Creative Artists in Toronto. Prior to joining WCA, she was a freelance publishing consultant. Meg holds an MA from UCL in London, UK and a BA from York University in Toronto, Canada.
