Event description

Description

For many families, the financial aid aspect of the college decision process is overwhelming and intimidating. We try to bring a little clarity and objectivity to that process. Join us for our newest workshop How to Maximize Scholarships & Financial Aid and Create a Budget to Pay for College where we explain the resources available (scholarships, grants, loans, etc.) and strategies for making smart decisions at this crucial time.

Topics Include:

Merit & Need-Based Aid

What are your options (savings, loans, scholarships)? We discuss options to minimize your potential out-of-pocket costs with merit and need-based aid. We cover the basics such as

  • Estimated Family Contribution (EFC)

  • How to know if you qualify for financial aid

  • Important details on how to ensure your child keeps the financial aid for all four years

Scholarships

There are thousands of private college scholarships out there, but researching and applying for the ones that are a good fit requires commitment. No one will hand out money—you have to put in the effort to get the return.

Effective Ways to Reduce College Costs

There are other effective strategies for bridging the gap between what a school costs and what a family can afford. We will discuss several of these options.

Deciphering Award Letters

Since each school formats its award letter differently, families often have difficulty figuring out what’s what. For example, that universities call student loans “financial aid” is deceptive and misleading for many families. Learn how to navigate award letters and understand the terminology.

About the Speaker

This workshop will be led by Partners For Achievement/HelloCollege Founder and Northwestern University graduate, Kevin Krebs, who has helped more than 10,000 families across the Chicagoland area with college planning in the 3 Steps to College Planning and Career workshop.

What Families Are Saying About PFA’s Workshops:

“Excellent! Informative and realistic. Helped explain aspects of the college process that I was unaware of.”

“Mr. Krebs did a great job! He was very personable. His knowledge of the entire process is impressive!”

“Very informative. I especially like the information about GPA correlation and scholarships/financial aid.”

“I really enjoyed all of the information about your S.A.F.E. schools, and I now am considering making a list of mine. I also enjoyed all of the merit and scholarship information.”

“I like how you explained everything in a way that was easy to understand. The S.A.F.E. acronym that you used to choose colleges was also very helpful. I now know what to research and what questions I should ask the college reps at the college fairs.”

“It was a very eye-opening experience!”

“The workshop really helped me to further understand college acceptance procedures and what I need to keep in mind when applying.”
