Event description
Learn how to make your own braided rug!

About this Event

I grew up watching my grandmother hand stitch the family’s braided rugs that her mother had made. Braided rugs are made of scraps of fabric which were precious during the dust bowl and then thrifty during the ‘50s. These rugs were heavy and made to last, but occasionally needed to sewn back together with love and patience from the decades of feet and furniture that laid on them.

I began by making my great-grams’ style of traditional braided wool rugs, where you make a braid and then stitch it together, but decided that there had to be a way to create a self-sewn method of rug-making and discovered the crochet method of rug making.

It seemed very simple to do, but my first crocheted rug looked more like an easter bonnet than a rug, (literally). The next one was so loose I could have used it as a fishing net once it stretched out. I have since spent years perfecting a method of rug-making that gives me the heavy flat rug that just feels nice to step on. I will discuss other items that can be made using this same technique as well.

This class will be limited in size and will be held outside, socially spaced apart in the fresh fall air. There will be various types of fabric scraps to practice the techniques on, but you can bring your own scraps to start a rug. Unless you are using the technique to make a pot-holder-sized rug, you go home with the start base of your new rug.

If you do not have crochet needles, no worries. There will also be loaner crochet needles that can be used during class, and then you can decide what size needle you prefer.

Shawn is a native Floridian and still cherishes the braided rugs that her great grandmother made for her living room as wooden chair seat cushions. A career teacher and gardener who dabbles deeply in the fabrics arts, she has experimented with knitting, crochet, braided rugs, quilting, weaving, embroidery, macrame and plain ‘ole clothes sewing.
