Description

How to Help your Therapy Clients stay Focused and On-Track

A 1 Day Workshop using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy & Contextual Behavioural Science

Many people come into therapy wanting their pain to go away. But in their eagerness to find solutions, they can often do things that make it harder for YOU to help them.

When a client tries to tell you as much as they can, presents a new problem every session, cannot set clear realistic goals or is hopeless about things getting better, it can leave both of you feeling stuck. The results are that the client doesn’t progress and you can feel inadequate.

The aim of this Acceptance & Commitment Therapy workshop is to give you a fresh perspective and a new way forwards, which includes:

  • Tools to help your client get focused and ready to make some changes
  • Lively experiential ways of working i.e. less thought records, questionnaires or values cards and more getting up and onto your feet – literally!
  • A framework for understanding why your client is doing what they are doing, so you can design interventions to move them and the therapy forwards
  • Space for thinking how you can creatively re-use techniques you already know

What is different about this training?

  • There will be very little in the way of didactic presentation, which means there will be more space and time for you to think, to participate and to learn from each other
  • The Trainer will be curious about the experiences, ideas and observations in the room, giving you the opportunity to develop your own reflections
  • You’ll get to observe demonstrations in the large group with input from the audience, letting you observe a modeled example to guide you
  • There will be regular chances to participate in small groups in different roles i.e. skills builder, case presenter, a builder’s mate and a process monitor
  • You’ll be taught specific ways to give feedback, which supports others in their learning

This workshop is about DOING, LEARNING TOGETHER, OBSERVING & SUPPORTING OTHERS.

Why this approach?

Based on established behavioural principles from contextual behavioural science, you’ll get more familiar with the concept of ‘workability’ in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. This provides a framework to help you focus on the function of in-session behaviours.

There will be opportunities to practice interventions and to receive feedback. The trainer recognises that these are essential components to your learning and developing competence.

Who is this for?

This workshop is aimed at the following practitioners:

  • Those who have some familiarity with Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). You may have attended an Introductory Workshop or learnt some techniques and you wish to deepen your understanding and skills
  • Those who practice other forms of therapy including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and want to learn more about working with the function of behaviours
  • Those who experience the challenges of helping your clients to stay on track in therapy

Course-Level Objectives

After completing the course, you will be able to:

  1. List the behaviours that clients display in sessions, which have the effect of limiting the progress of therapy
  2. Describe the impact these behaviours have on your experience and your practices
  3. Identify what a workable and freely chosen value looks like
  4. Discriminate between Two Modes of Attentional Focus
  5. Make the task of clarifying values easier and more engaging for the client
  6. Create incentives for the client to turn away from in-session behaviours that get in the way of progress
  7. Create incentives for the client to turn towards purposeful and life-improving activities
  8. Describe a system to your client that will help them take values-based actions
  9. Build in accountability for your clients so that they can be successful in creating new long-lasting habits
  10. Define useful ways of delivering feedback to support someone’s learning
