Description

How to Engage a Community, with Carrie Brown

Mon, January 22, 10am-1pm- Room 440

This course will offer an introduction to the tools and strategies journalists can use to better understand and build trust with their audiences. Engagement is increasingly becoming a priority for journalists, as evidenced by the many sessions on it at the recent Online News Organization conference, and this session will get you started on a new way of thinking about your reporting.

We’ll talk about how you can collect questions from a community to drive your reporting; explore tools that allow you to gather diverse perspectives via listening posts, text messages or bots; and discuss how you can find and verify information using social media. How can you turn passive receivers of information to engaged participants that are more likely to become loyal subscribers? We’ll look at a number of examples from leading news organizations like ProPublica and the Center for Investigative Reporting.
