Event description
The Barnes & Noble Galleria presents the writing workshop, “How to Draw Inspiration from Personal Experiences to Develop Characters."

About this Event

In honor of Novel Writing Month, which is observed in November, the Barnes and Noble Galleria is happy to present the writing workshop, “How to Draw Inspiration from Personal Experiences to Develop Characters.”

The workshop, which will take place on Sat., Nov. 16, 2019, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., will be led by University of Minnesota writing instructor Maureen Aitken, recipient of the Foreword Review INDIE Prize (General Fiction, Gold Winner) and the Nilsen Prize for her collection of stories, The Patron Saint of Lost Girls. The collection has earned a Kirkus Star and a Foreword Star, and was named a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award. Her work has received a Minnesota State Arts Board’s Artist Initiative Grant, a Loft Mentor Award, a grant from the SASE/Jerome Foundation, and an award from Ireland’s Fish Short Story Prize.

During the workshop, Aitken will share the story behind her book, and also lead exercises that teach attendees how to draw inspiration from personal experiences to develop characters in their own writing. Bring paper and a writing implement along to take notes and participate in a writing exercise.

Cost to attend the workshop will be just $18. Barnes and Noble members qualify for a 10 percent discount. Each attendee will go home with a signed copy of The Patron Saint of Lost Girls.

Register for the workshop in advance through Eventbrite, or show up at the store the day of the event for admittance. No payment is required at this time. The $18 can be paid in person any time between now and Nov. 16 at the Barnes and Noble Galleria, located at 3230 Galleria, Edina, MN 55435. Once payment is made, attendees will receive a wristband to attend the workshop, and their copy of The Patron Saint of Lost Girls.
