Event description

Description

Have you ever...

  • Been sued over consumer debt?
  • Had your wages garnished?
  • Thought about filing for bankruptcy?

This is the forum for you. Join ProPublica and Hawthorne Community Center to connect with attorneys and personal finance experts, and hear from reporters who have been looking into the issues. Learn your rights. Tell your story. Get advice on protecting yourself and your livelihood.

ProPublica, a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to investigative journalism, has spent years reporting on how being sued over an unpaid debt can be extraordinarily damaging for a consumer, with the most devastating consequence being the deduction of money from a debtors’ wages or bank account. In the state of Indiana, collectors can garnish a staggering 25 percent of debtors’ after-tax pay and even clean out their bank accounts.

Despite the alarming nature of this problem, resources for help are largely out of sight from the people who need them most. That's why ProPublica is teaming up with Hawthorne Community Center to provide information on how debtors can keep more of their pay, programs and resources for low-income debtors, when and how to file for bankruptcy, and more.

Lunch will be provided, and parking/entrance for this event will be on the North side of the building.

If you’ve hit financial difficulties any time in the last ten years and thought about filing for bankruptcy, ProPublica wants to hear from you. Text hello to 317-707-6371.
