When trying to understand the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) employers can end up with plenty of headaches. It can be difficult to avoid mistakes when administering the FMLA, even when an employer has the best intentions.

Heidi Lane and Jennifer Devine, staff attorneys with the Connecticut Department of Labor’s Office of Program Policy, will provide participants with a working knowledge of the most frequent mistakes employers can make when handling FMLA issues, along with best practices, what to avoid, and common concerns, including:

  • Demystifying common misconceptions about FMLA
  • Knowing an employer’s rights under FMLA

  • Defining a “serious health condition”

  • Including important information in the employer’s FMLA Policy

  • Using the medical certification to the employer’s advantage

Participants are encouraged to bring real or hypothetical questions to the session for an open discussion.

Check-in and breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the workshop which starts promptly at 8 a.m. and concludes at approximately 10:30 a.m.
