Event description

Description

The sexual assault medical forensic exam is a key component for providing care to victims of sexual assault. There is a serious shortage of sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) and it is critical that when survivors seek medical care, healthcare providers offer them the best information, services and support available.

The Zonta Club of Tallahassee, the Refuge House, and the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence are working to increase the number of certified SANEs serving the community. We are sponsoring an informational workshop for nurses and nursing students about the role of the SANE and resources available to help those interested in pursuing certification.

1.5 hours nursing contact hours are pending approval.

The program will cover the following topics:

  • The role of the SANE: relationship to survivor; elements of the forensic exam; nurse scheduling and compensation; and eligibility and certification requirements.

  • The role of other team members involved in supporting victims of sexual assault: victim advocates, law enforcement, and the criminal justice system.

Light refreshments and registration from 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM
