About this event

Please join the Ford Foundation and philanthropic partners the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, Democracy & Power Innovation Fund, Funders' Committee for Civic Participation, Heising-Simons Foundation, The JPB Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and Rockefeller Family Fund for an afternoon of discussion with the authors of Prisms of the People: Power and Organizing in the 21st Century.

In this era of enormous social, political, and economic change, as people all over the world demand that the systems that structure their lives become more responsive to their needs, long-standing patterns of inequality and disaffection persist.

As more philanthropists and funders orient their grant making strategies around theories of power, the research and learning in Prisms of the People: Power and Organizing in the 21st Century presents an opportunity to reexamine those strategies with questions of power and measurement front and center.

Questions we will discuss include:

  • What does “power building” mean?
  • How do we know if movements are building power?
  • What are examples of power shift outcomes? Are electoral outcomes power outcomes? Are policy outcomes power outcomes?
  • How do different movement leaders and organizations measure their own power?
  • How/should philanthropy think about measuring power in the context of their grant making strategies?

We appreciate this opportunity to learn with you from speakers including Maria Torres-Springer, Ethan Frey, Hahrie Han, Liz McKenna, Arisha Hatch, Tram Nguyen and more.
