Brown Bag Lunch & Learn Series

The annual Giving USA report on philanthropy provides the field with a deluge of useful information. How do the findings apply to your organization and how can they be implemented in a fundraising strategy? Come join Tamela Spicer and Matthew Downey in an engaging discussion about Giving USA 2017 data and learn how you can put the research to work for you and your organization.


Through this discussion, you'll learn:

  • about donor trends that might apply to your organization
  • about national giving and how to forecast for the future and inform your organization's strategic fundraising
  • how to utilize the data to strengthen your organization's storytelling in proposals and other communications

Matthew Downey is program director for Nonprofit Services at the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy, Grand Valley State University. In this capacity, he is a frequent speaker and instructor on a wide array of nonprofit management issues and offers one-on-one technical assistance to nonprofit organizations across the state of Michigan. His areas of expertise include fund development, governance, board/staff relationships and general nonprofit management issues.

Tamela Spicer is program manager for Nonprofit Services at the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy, and is a part-time faculty in the School of Public, Nonprofit and Health Administration at Grand Valley State University. She works primarily with faith-based clients, and specializes in organizational structure, fund development, and strategic planning.
