Event description

Description

“I think [Etsy] is a British site, but I believe they’re making inroads in America!” -- UK buyer.

How did American-based Etsy create a localized experience that felt authentic? Join us at Etsy’s San Francisco office as we talk Localization and Translation in the world of Apps, Web, and Mobile Web. Engineers from Etsy will talk about native apps, formatting currency for a locally credible experience, and strategies for tagging messages for translation.

This meetup will feature three talks by Etsy engineers. We'll also have time devoted for participant lightning talks, so please submit yours for consideration when you register!

Event schedule

5:30 -- 6:00 PM : Happy half-hour with drinks and snacks

6:00 -- 7:00 PM : Talks

7:00 -- 8:00 PM : Q&A and Social time

  • Welcome to Etsy, by Matt Newkirk

  • Lightning Talks (up to 2-3, by you!)

  • Localization in Native Apps, by Nicollette Lui

  • Currency Formatting, by Aditya Bhargava

  • Tagging messages for translation, by Gerardo Moad

Nicolette Lui is a software engineer on the localization team at Etsy. Recently, she localized Etsy’s price formatting in the iOS apps.

Aditya Bhargava is a software engineer at Etsy. He works on the market localization team. In his free time, Adit likes to draw and read.

Gerardo Moad is a software engineer at Etsy on the translation tools team.

If you would like to submit a lightning talk related to localization (the field is huge, we know!), please send us your abstract by 5 PM on December 2. We’ll let you know on December 5 if we’d like you to speak!
