Event description
In the How Do Weather and Climate Affect Our Lives? module, students learn why and how scientists measure weather.

About this Event

In this unit, students explore and use a thermometer, anemometer, wind cane, and rain gauge to measure the weather outside their school. They use past weather data to identify annual temperature patterns in their school’s location. Students explore climates around the world and compare them to their school’s location. Students identify problems caused by hazardous weather and use evidence to identify the type of weather that cased each problem. Students design and build a roof to protect from one type of hazardous weather: heavy precipitation. In the final science challenge, students analyze and interpret patters in climate data to recommend the best time and location for a kids’ soccer tournament.

During this course, participants will:

  • Engage in three-dimensional learning for developing disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and cross cutting concepts
  • Participate as an adult learner to experience investigations and science and engineering content
  • Share teaching strategies to support literacy and inquiry-based learning
  • Identify the learning goals in the module and how the investigations support the Big Ideas
  • Examine assessment opportunities
  • Develop notebook as a resource
