Description

How Can I Help? Keeping Children Safe from Abuse and Violence is a 6-hour domestic violence training for people who work with families, youth, and children. This course is ideal for childcare providers who have a greater likelihood of encountering people experiencing family violence. This NO COST training will provide tools to help recognize abuse and violence and offer resources and strategies for prevention and intervention. A free manual will be provided to each participant.


PLEASE NOTE: The training will be held at the Humboldt County Office of Education in the Educational Resource Center Redwood Room.

How Can I Help training provides a basic understanding of the dynamics of intimate partner violence and its effects on children, including:

Domestic Violence Overview

  • What is Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)?
  • Types and patterns of abusive behaviors
  • Stages of change model
  • Barriers to leaving and disclosure
  • Using a trauma informed approach
  • How to ask about IPV
  • Violence types across the lifespan
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Effects of Domestic Violence on Children and Resiliency

  • How are children exposed?
  • How does witnessing domestic violence affect children?
  • What do you do when a child discloses?
  • Impact of exposure by ages and developmental stages
  • Contributing factors to impact of domestic violence
  • Approaches to support children experiencing violence and promote healing
  • How children heal from trauma
  • Resiliency in children exposed to domestic violence

Community Approaches to Safety Planning

  • Creating a safe and consistent environment
  • Developing a safety and prevention program for children
  • Reaching out if you suspect violence is occurring

Impact of Working in High Intensity Professions

  • Types of stress
  • Burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma
  • Self-care for caregivers


Training led by: Kris Huschle, Senior Health Education Specialist for Humboldt County DHHS Prevention & Early Intervention (PEI) Program and Family Violence Prevention Program; Marian Strong, Health Education Specialist for Humboldt County DHHS Family Violence Prevention Program and Kristen Smith, Health Education Specialist for Humboldt County DHHS Suicide Prevention Program.


This How Can I Help? Training is offered in support of the Humboldt County Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council, Child Abuse Awareness Month activities.




Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for this training.

5.5 CEUs, no additional fees

This course meets the qualifications for 5.5 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Humboldt County Health and Human Services (HCHHS) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs, Provider Number 76178. HCHHS maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing; Provider Number CEP 15353, Humboldt County Dept of Health and Human Services, for 5.5 contact hours.

Provider approved by the California Association for Alcohol/Drug Educators, Provider Number CP40 720 C 0319, Humboldt County Dept. of Health and Human Services, for 5.5 continuing education units. This course is free and no continuing education fee will be charged.
