Schedule and Details below:

  • Break
  • 7:00 pm Songwriter in the Round with Susan Gibson, Ken Gaines and Helene Cronin (Included with bootcamp ticket. If not attending bootcamp, register for the Songwriter in the Round General Admission ticket).

Curated and led by Houston's own Master Songwriter Ken Gaines along with award-winning songwriters Susan Gibson and Helene Cronin, attendees are guaranteed to enjoy a day filled with inspiration, craft instruction, improvement in technique and valuable takeaways to improve their songwriting skills immediately. Classwork includes:

  • Start With a Hook Line: While there are many ways to approach writing a song this seminar demonstrates one structured way to go about it. Basic elements of songwriting are described and discussed, and either one group song or several small-group songs are written in the process. This class is geared toward those just starting out in songwriting. (Ken Gaines)
  • How To Get Out of Your Beautiful Rut: After a while we all tend to write the same "type" of song over and over. And, even if we are successful with them it becomes our "beautiful rut." This class takes the participants back to the basic music elements of songwriting and teaches a structured approach to bringing variety into newer songs, an approach that can be used for the rest of a writer's life. (Ken Gaines)
  • Songwriting with Susan Gibson: Susan has taught songwriting workshops to kids of all ages – from 6 all the way up to adult (but young at heart). Best known for her hit song "Wide Open Spaces", Susan has been a mentor at the Real Life, Real Music Summer Camp in The Woodlands, Texas for the past five years. She’s also given workshops and talks at The Brauntex Theater, The San Antonio Songwriters’ Saloon, The Songwriters Serenade Competition, The Bugle Boy Soldier’ Songs Program, Belmont University, UT Austin, NSAI Nashville and Houston Chapters, and at The Boys and Girls Club among others. She will share what she learned about writing first for your own clarity, then for your audience, then for the industry. First start with a compelling story. She will spend time with students to help them develop an idea, and write with clarity to take it from concept to reality.
  • Critique Circle: Class participants will have an opportunity to share their own songs in this critique circle and receive real world feedback from award winning songwriters and class teachers Ken Gaines, Susan Gibson and Helene Cronin.

Class participants will have an opportunity to play live in a songwriter circle following the class for a critique session with Helene Cronin, Ken Gaines, Susan Gibson.
