Event Details

The Texas Tribune is pleased to present, in partnership with Houston First, a conversation series on the major policy debates of the Texas Legislature — and what they mean for the state’s largest city and surrounding communities.

Join us in person or on our livestream for the third installment of this series: a look ahead for the city of Houston with state Sens. Paul Bettencourt and Sylvia Garcia. Tribune CEO and Editor-in-Chief will moderate.

Bettencourt, R-Houston, is currently serving his first term representing Senate District 7. He was recently named chairman of the Select Committee on Property Tax Reform and Relief. He is also vice chairman of the Intergovernmental Relations Committee and sits on the Finance, Education and Higher Education committees. Bettencourt also serves as CEO of Bettencourt Tax Advisors. Previously, he spent 10 years as Harris County's elected tax assessor-collector.

Garcia, D-Houston, has represented Senate District 6 since 2013. She is a member of the Senate Education, Intergovernmental Relations, Transportation and Veterans Affairs & Military Installations committees. Garcia previously served as director and presiding judge of the Houston Municipal System and was later elected as the Houston city controller. In 2002, she was elected to the Harris County Commissioners Court.

This event will be held in Grand Ballroom A of the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. The event is free and open to the public, and includes a complimentary lunch. Hourly parking is available at the Hilton Americas-Houston garage, which is attached via skybridge to the Convention Center on level 2 (parking not included in registration).

The conversation will also be livestreamed at texastribune.org/livestream (starting at noon), and the video will be accessible for viewing afterward.

The "Houston & the Legislature" series of conversations is generously sponsored by Houston First and supported by Pierpont Communications, Texas Central Partners, Comcast and  Southwest Airlines, the official airline of Texas Tribune Events. Media support is provided by Houston Public Media. Tribune events are also supported through contributions from our founding investors and members.
