About Summer Rayne Oakes, Homestead Brooklyn
Long-time houseplant enthusiast and environmental scientist-by-training, Summer Rayne Oakes, has spent most of her time outdoors—working on restoring forests, reclaiming mine sites, and monitoring stream water quality. That all changed when she moved to Brooklyn in 2005, where she began to bring nature indoors into her Williamsburg apartment; she now attends to over 500 houseplants. In 2017, she launched Homestead Brooklyn, a blog and YouTube channel to help people become more attuned to nature in the city through the simple things—from a potted plant to a walk in the Botanical Gardens. You can follow her greenthumb journeys on her Instagram @homesteadbrooklyn.
