Sid began playing folk music and original songs in Calgary before there was a Calgary Folk Music Club or an Edmonton Folk Festival. He is a fourth generation Albertan and a former park warden who worked throughout the mountain parks for many years. He is also a published poet and the author of five books of nonfiction including the “Black Grizzly of Whiskey Creek” which was short-listed for the 2009 Governor General’s Literary Award in Nonfiction. We have proudly carried his award winning books here since we opened. The songs on his second album, Elsewhere, range from laments for third world child soldiers to a celebration of Alberta’s vanishing ranching culture to passionate love songs and up-tempo celebrations of Rocky Mountain days and nights. His writings and songs are noted for dramatic depth but also for a side-winding sense of humour, and he thinks of his prairie and mountain material as “Leaning on the Wind and Falling off the Mountain.”

“With pipes like that, why isn’t he singing everywhere?

Vicki Gabereau , C.B.C. Radio

“Marty’s latest, The Black Grizzly of Whiskey Creek, is a work of poetic genius.” Canadian Geographic, 2008. Winner of the Grand Prize, Banff Festival of Mountain Books.

“[Mountain Earth]... the first track on Elsewhere...makes the rest of the universe fade away, and while listening to it I can hardly remember how any other song goes.”

Murray Leeder: Canadian Folk Music Bulletin, Spring 2004
