Hour of Code is an international event held every December during Computer Science Education Week. During the week, students and schools around the world are asked to set aside one hour to complete a computer science activity. For many students, this is only the first or second time they have a chance to try out computer programming!
In honor of #CSEdWeek, TPF4Y staff, board, volunteers and friends are joining forces on Wednesday December 7th to inspire our local kids by supporting every student at Sidener Academy in completing an Hour of Code.
Our goal is to give every student the opportunity to learn computer science and to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. For one hour all students at Sidener Academy will be engaged in basic programming that will be self-guided through step by step tutorials.
Parking: Park in the Glendale Lowes surface lot and plan to walk through the wooded lot to the back of the school, there a TPF4Y staff or volunteer will direct you to the main office. This will keep you out of the student dismissal and pick-up lines that can get pretty hectic at 4pm.
Duties: Check into the front office with Mrs. Drummer, the school administrative assistant, and a TPF4Y staff member will escort you to a classroom. Each volunteer will be assigned to one of the 15 classes at Sidener Academy. A teacher will remain in the room with you, and you will be teamed up with another volunteer. You will then introduce yourself to the class and explain what you do, introduce the Hour of Code, and introduce computer science. Don't worry, we will walk you through all of this! You will then instruct the students to open the Hour of Code app and begin coding. Volunteers will then spend the hour walking around to assist students with questions they may have.
Homework: Once you have registered for the event, TPF4Y will send you the online game you will be leading the classroom through so you can familiarize yourself with the game prior to the event.
Celebration: All good deeds deserve recogntion. Immediately following the service project, please join us at Bent Rail Brewery located at 5301 Winthrop Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46220. Snacks are on us, beers are on you.
