PROGRAM

Learn about the new 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design, which became mandatory on March 15, 2012, with a focus on the differences between the new design standard and the former ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) as they apply to places of lodging. This session will address substantive changes to the regulations and design criteria applicable to places of lodging, including the requirement for on-going barrier removal in existing facilities. The program will also address common oversights made by architects during design and by contractors during construction, which can result in violations of the updated ADA regulations and 2010 Standards for Accessible Design and provide practical solutions for compliance.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At this event, attendees will:

  • Gain a brief introductory knowledge of the accessibility laws and codes, specifically the ADA.
  • Be able to distinguish between new construction, alteration and barrier removal requirements of the ADA.
  • Learn about important scoping changes applicable to lodging facilities. Be able to recite some of the key technical changes found in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.


SPEAKER

Mark Jackson is an Accessibility Consultant at Steven Winter Associates. Mr. Jackson is an International Code Council (ICC) Certified Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner with specialized expertise in the accessible design and construction requirements of federal, state and local laws and codes, including the ADA. Among other client types, Mr. Jackson provides accessibility consulting to key players in the hotel industry, including designers, architects, owners and managers. He is an adjunct instructor at New York University and the Pratt Institute.
