Description

The Hostos Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) Program is excited to host our 3rd Annual Transition Age Youth Conference on Friday April 17, 2020.

UPDATE: In light of the COVID-19 outbreak and the need for social distancing; the Hostos WIPA team has made the decision to postpone our Transition Age Youth Conference this spring. Our priority is the health and well being of our attendees and presenters, and we have been closely monitoring and evaluating the developing situation in New York. Our decision was made in order to adhere to CUNY, CDC and WHO guidelines and believe that this is the best option given our current circumstances and the uncertainty surrounding the virus.

We are still committed to presenting the conference in our fullest capacity as soon as it is safe to do so. We are currently hoping to reschedule for some time towards the end of May or June of this year; and will be sure to share updates whenever possible. Please feel free to contact our team directly with any specific questions or concerns, we will respond to them to the best of our ability.

Thank you all for your cooperation and continued excitement for our Transition Age Youth Conference.

This conference will be held at Hostos Community College and is intended for students and youth receiving SSDI and/or SSI disability benefits, between the ages of 14 - 26, their parents, and services providers working with this population. The conference seeks to address the unique issues and challenges encountered by transition age youth (TAY) , as they explore their educational and career opportunites; and seek the resources available to them during this transtional period.

The conference workshops will focus on:

  • Navigating Social Security Administration SSI/SSDI work incentives and accurate work activity reporting
  • An overview of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and CUNY LEADS services available to students as they move from high school to college or training
  • Best practices for disclosing a disability to an employer and handling employer discrimination

To close the conference, a current WIPA client will share her personal experience of working with the Hostos WIPA program and how these services have helped along the journey towards her employment goals.
