- 8 a.m.: Pesticide Core Topics – UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County staff
This two-hour core module will help you understand the basics behind pesticide labels, ingredients, formulations, signal words, precaution statements, and environmental hazard statements. Directions for mixing and loading, application, storage, and disposal also will be covered.
- 10:10 a.m.: Pruning Landscape Palms – Bob Mertens
What should a healthy, properly pruned palm look like? Contrary to popular belief, a properly fertilized and pruned palm should have a round crown with green fronds right to the bottom, not crowns that resemble feather dusters. In addition, pruning palms improperly can attract harmful insects and spread serious diseases. From the L&O to the LCLM, learn how proper pruning and IPM can increase the health and vigor of palms and help reduce the use of pesticides.
- 11 a.m.: Pests of Landscape Palms – Bob Mertens
There are many pests of landscape palms in Florida, with new ones introduced continuously. Learn to identify the common, palm-attacking insects and mites, and how to control them through IPM and the judicious use of pesticides.
