Event description

Description

Get ready for Halloween with one of Australia’s best horror writers.

Why should you write horror fiction? Because it allows you to explore the worst and best of humanity and, if you’re honest, yourself. Good horror fiction should chill, disturb, creep-out and frighten. Learn some of the tricks of the trade with one of Australia’s most awarded horror writers, Kaaron Warren.

A number of story ideas will be generated, discussed, workshopped and developed. We'll do this by:

  • Identifying why we write horror;

  • Exploring ways to tap into the 'story brain' that sometimes lies hidden;

  • Finding ways to make your story stand out from all the others; and

  • Learning where our taboo lines are and whether we should cross them.

About the Tutor

Kaaron Warren has been publishing horror and science fiction for more than 20 years. She’s won awards close to home (the ACT Writers and Publishers Award, three times!) and far away (the Shirley Jackson Award). She’s sold over 200 stories and has 6 short story collections and 4 novels in print. Her most recent novel, The Grief Hole, won the Canberra Critics Award, and is the first novel to win the Aurealis Award, the Australian Shadows Award and the Ditmar Award.

She will appear as a Guest of Honour at the New Zealand National Science Fiction Convention in 2019 and is MC at this year's Conflux Convention.
