Event description

Description

Celebrate Otsego County hops at The Farmers’ Museum’s annual event–Hopsego, taking place Saturday, August 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event brings dozens of family-friendly, hop-related activities together throughout the museum’s historic grounds. In addition to the great line-up of music and food vendors, adults can partake in beer tastings which include the new Hopsego Harvest Ale. Visitors of all ages will see, smell, touch and learn about what was once referred to as the county’s “King Crop” – the hop. You’ll find soda tastings, a tintype portraiture studio, hop picking, storage vessel pottery demonstrations, hop planting and care, hop tinctures and infusions, and displays of hop items and photos from the area selected from the museum’s vast collection. There are family activities and games as well as the museum’s daily offerings that include the Empire State Carousel, the Children’s Barnyard, and the Historic Village. Visit FarmersMuseum.org for a complete list of activities.

Otsego County was the largest hop growing area in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The rich tradition of the hop industry and agriculture supported local families and migrant workers and resulted in ancillary businesses related to the niche trade. Hopsego celebrates the history and tradition of hop growing, harvesting, and related industries in Otsego and surrounding counties from the 1800s to today.

Talk with hop experts including Ian Porto of Northern Eagle Hop Pelletizing and others discussing subjects such as what are hop pellets, what was a hop house used for, and how to grow hops.

Stop in Todd’s General Store for a book signing from noon to 2:00 p.m. with herbal educator Gert Coleman and her book “Hops: Brewing and Beyond.”

Beer tastings take place from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on the Bump Tavern green. Access to the beer tasting tent is an additional $10 and includes a free, four-ounce, etched Hopsego tasting glass. Tastings provided by 212 Brewery, Cooperstown Brewing Company, Council Rock Brewery, Empire Brewing Company, Northway Brewing Company, Brewery Ommegang, Red Shed Brewery and The Farmers’ Museum. (Tastings only. No beer will be sold by the glass.)

This year, The Farmers’ Museum unveils a new beer to celebrate the area’s rich hop history, Hopsego Harvest Ale, created through a unique collaboration with Cooperstown Brewing Company, Hager Hops and Northern Eagle Beverages, and brewed at the Cooperstown Brewing Company’s Lake George facility. This limited release micro-brew can only be found at The Farmers’ Museum tasting table beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The entire family can enjoy soda pop tastings from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in Bump Tavern.

Hear great live music on the museum’s village green beginning with local favorites Hanzolo (11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.), followed by guitarist Jeff Syman (1:00-2:00 p.m.). Top off the day with the Spectacular Average Boys (2:00-4:30 p.m.).

Enjoy an artisanal pizza and soft drink at one of Central New York’s top-rated food trucks, Mangia Macrina’s Wood Fire Pizza or pick up an exceptional BBQ sandwich and a tangy side of beans and bacon at Phat Backs BBQ’s food truck–both near the Bump Tavern Green. Visit the museum’s Crossroad’s Café next to Bump Tavern anytime during the day for additional offerings.

Find hop-related demonstrations throughout the day in our historic village including cooking and baking using hops in the Lippitt Farmhouse, 19th-century work clothes for hop laborers created in the More House, hop cultivation tool creation in the Blacksmith Shop, coopering on the Carousel Green, and much more.

General admission tickets: $12 (adults 13-64), $10.50 (seniors 65+), and $6 (junior 7-12). Museum members, active and retired career military personnel, and kids (6 and under) are free. Purchase tickets in advance on Eventbrite.com or at the door on the day of the event. Access to the beer tasting tent is an additional $10 for visitors aged 21 and over with valid photo ID.
