Event description

Description

The HOPE RISING Gala features internationally known guests who are impressive role models of courage, compassion and humanitarian concern. Each year these guests are honored, and funds are raised for programs addressing SOHO’s mission to heal, educate, nurture and empower orphans and vulnerable children.

This year, proceeds will go toward intervention programs addressing Gender based Abuse and Human trafficking.
This includes SASY!, an intervention program using steel drum music as a medium to engage youth and a Safe House for children at risk of human trafficking. The program will be introduced amongst Indianapolis Peer Leaders this Fall, as well as in Swaziland.

In Southern Africa, more than 1 in 3 girls experience sexual abuse. According to a report by BBC news, “A female born in South Africa has a greater chance of being raped in her lifetime than learning how to read (Dempster, 2002). 1 in every 6 women in Indiana has been a victim of rape. Indiana has the second highest rate in the nation of forced sex (in grades 9-12), but only 15% of sexual assaults and rapes in Indiana are reported.

HOPE RISING! GALA HONOREES:

Nontombi Naomi Tutu
The challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa has led Naomi Tutu to her present work as an activist for human rights. Her professional experience ranges from Development Consulting in West Africa to coordinating programs on Race and Gender and Gender-Based Violence at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town. She has charted a path of social advocacy believing the whole human family suffers when abuse and oppression is accepted. She is a powerful voice for empowerment of girls and women worldwide. She is the third child of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu.

Beth Nielsen Chapman
Beth Nielsen Chapman's music and artistry heals as much as it entertains because some of her most powerful songs are rooted in her recovery from personal loss. A survivor of breast cancer she has toured extensively presenting her 'creativity workshops', and helping those who have experienced loss to find a path to healing. An inductee into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, she has penned songs for top artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler, Elton John, Faith Hill and others. Her music has also been heard on ER, Dawson's Creek, and on soundtracks for The Prince of Egypt, Message In A Bottle, Where the Heart Is, and other films.
