Event description

Description

One step at a time, we can make an impact in the lives of those who struggle daily with an eosinophil associated disease.

Join us for APFED’s Hope on the Horizon Walk at Clement Park on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 9:00 AM (registration starts at 8:00 AM) and make a difference by helping to raise funds for research and awareness for these diseases.

Proceeds from the walk/run will support APFED’s Hope on the Horizon Research Fund, which provides grants to investigators to pursue unique research ideas that could lead to less invasive diagnostic measures and more effective treatments for those suffering from eosinophil associated diseases.

A Message from our Walk Chair - Dyann Powell

My name is Dyann Powell and I have 3 daughters. Our youngest daughter, Emma, is recently diagnosed with EoE. She has been sick since she was a baby. In fact, while she was being watched for pneumonia for a day, she had so much trouble with the formula that the nurses came to tell me that she needed hypoallergenic formula.

Things did not get much better when I started nursing. She had poor growth, ear infections leading to ear tubes, a tonsilectomy at age 2, reflux meds, miralax for chronic constipation, and severe stomach pains. She was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy at 18 months and by age 3 was on Zyrtec year round along with Flonase for her other allergies .

At six years old, she was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder which sometimes coexists with EoE. Last fall, she began complaining of a bubble being stuck in her throat and by Christmas, her "bubble" was so bad that she began having panic attacks when she ate and insisted that she was choking. Thankfully, we have a wonderful pediatrician who immediately referred us to Children's Hospital.

In January, she had a scope and biopsy and confirmed her EoE. We were able to get in to the GED program at Children's with Dr Furuta. The dietary changes were so hard in the beginning! She cannot have wheat, eggs, dairy, or soy. She just had another scope and biopsy which showed significant improvement and she is feeling so much better.

She still has some healing to do, but is on the right track. I want to raise awareness for this rare, but serious illness and be able to help others who are in our situation

To register for the walk, click the green "Tickets" button in the upper right hand corner. This is also where you can order your t-shirt until Friday, August 11th . There will be a limited supply of t-shirts available for purchase at the walk as well.
