HOPE NOW Mortgage Industry Conference: Impact of Natural Disaster on Housing & Improving Homeowner Recovery

Building on lessons learned, delivery of improved solutions and excellence in customer service

Topping over $306 billion, 2017 proved to be the costliest year for natural disasters in United States history. Multiple hurricanes in the southeast, flooding in Texas, wildfires in California, and tornadoes in the Midwest and mudslides in Hawaii ravaged communities across the country. Collectively natural disasters contributed to record breaking damage and a lengthy recovery. Natural disasters are a regular occurrence and tragically impact Americans most valuable asset – their home. The mortgage industry, government, and investors will continue to manage all events from small occurrences to catastrophes.

It’s important to study trends and data so the industry can improve existing programs, delivery of assistance and bring critical information to homeowners. For the mortgage industry, the uncertainty in policy and procedures creates challenges in assisting homeowners affected by natural disaster. There is currently no standard mortgage servicing disaster handbook. Disaster recovery is much more than simply providing a forbearance. With improved collaboration, awareness about critical resources, information and assistance can be provided to homeowners more efficiently and effectively. For some Americans, it will take years to recover and homeowners will continue to look to their servicers for answers and solutions regarding their home.
