The Hope Conference is designed to meet the educational and informational needs of the public and cancer patients, survivors, family members and caregivers. The day will feature presentations by cancer specialists, medical experts, allied health professionals and cancer survivors.

The Hope Conference will be offered in person and via live webcast. You will need to register here even if joining virtually!

Lunch is free for first 200 Survivors/Guests that register. Social Work CE attendees will need to pay $10 upon check-in for lunch.

Social Work CE Details: The Mississippi State Department of Health presents “Hope Conference: Lighting the Way to Cancer Survivorship” with support from MSDH Mississippi Partnership For Comprehensive Cancer Control (MP3C). The Mississippi State Department of Health (DP:SWB120007) is approved as a provider for continuing education by the Mississippi Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapists; Approval Period: (dates). 2 continuing education clock hours (General) have been applied for and are pending approval. Attendance verification and a course evaluation will be required in order to receive CE credit. CE certificates will be awarded after the event via email. Expert Panel: Upon completing this presentation, Social Workers will be able to:

1. Utilize knowledge gained to make appropriate referral for needed support services for cancer patients and caregivers before, during and after a cancer experience.

2. Identify appropriate resources for decision making when standard treatment is not an option or no longer desired.

3. Discuss palliative care as an option during and after a cancer experience

Karla S. Hardin, MS; Hardin Life Resources:

1. Identify the importance of needed support to overcome emotional trauma in the body for cancer survivors and caregivers during and after a cancer experience.

2. Identify healthy strategies to overcome “Trauma in the body” for survivors and caregivers during and after a cancer experience

3. Utilize knowledge gained to make appropriate community referrals for emotional/psychological support after a cancer experience for survivors and caregivers

Susan Shamberger, MD; UMMC:

1. Review the importance of diagnostic imaging before, during and after a cancer diagnosis

2. Utilize knowledge gained to facilitate compliance with needed follow-up imaging after completion of treatment for breast cancer

3. Identify the importance of caregiver support and understanding of needed imaging after a cancer diagnosis.

Tammy Young, MD, FACP; Jackson Oncology Associates:

1. Identify appropriate survivorship goals after completion of planned cancer treatment course for patients and caregivers.

2. Provide at least 2 facts on how caregivers can assist with managing needed follow-up care once cancer treatment is completed

3. Utilize knowledge gained of assist in appropriate decision making related to life-style choices after cancer treatment.

Ryan Blakeney, BBA, MHS; Mississippi Insurance Department:

1. Discuss how the MS Insurance Department enforces the laws and regulations set forth by the state regarding health insurance.

2. Identify the various insurance products and services available to Mississippians.

3. Utilize knowledge gained of insurance resources available to cancer patients to assist them in navigating through their cancer journey.

CE Breakout Session: Upon completing this presentation, Social Workers will be able to:

Karla Hardin, MS; Hardin Life Resources; “Getting Beyond the Trauma of Cancer”

1. Identify how “Trauma” can be stored in the body and its impact during a cancer experience.

2. Utilize practical strategies to overcome the overwhelming impact of cancer on relationships, emotions, and spiritual life

3. Identify resources for cancer survivors and caregivers to support their bodies, emotions, relationships, and spiritual life during and after a cancer experience.
