Join us at Crescent Hill Baptist Church the weekend of September 25-26 to Honor the Legacy of Diana Garland. Her children, Rev. John Garland and Sarah Garland will be presenting lectures and preaching on Sunday morning. Dr. Diana Richmond Garland was a social work educator who devoted her career to integrating social work practice and the Christian faith. Dr. Garland was the founding dean of Baylor University’s social work school, which was later named in her honor, and the second dean of the Carver School of Church Social Work at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Speakers:

Sarah Garland is the executive editor of the Hechinger Report, where she oversees editorial planning and budgeting, edits K-12 stories, and manages editorial partnerships with other news outlets. She is the author of Gangs in Garden City (2009) and Divided We Fail (2013). Sarah will be presenting “Do Justice: Moving from Anger at Injustice to Action that Makes a Difference” on Saturday afternoon. Sensitive Content Warning: During this talk, the speaker will be discussing the research on and some women’s experience of clergy sexual abuse.

Rev. John Garland is pastor of the San Antonio Mennonite Church. He leads a Healing Hospitality Ministry for Asylum Seekers and Pastors, where each morning he conducts a service of Psalm-based prayers, works with those held in immigration prisons, and supports the community of asylum-seekers centered in the church. John will be presenting “Loving Mercy: How We Love with the Healing Love of God” Saturday afternoon.
