ELLIOT A. "BUTCH" GARRISON

Recipient, "2013 Outstanding Advocate for Cultural & Historical Education"

The Native American Indian Alliance Historical Society recently named Elliot A. Garrison as a recipient of a 2013 OUTSTANDING ADVOCATE FOR CULTURAL & HISTORICAL EDUCATION AWARD.  Mr. Garrison will be honored on Wednesday, April 24th at The Woodlands Mansion, Woodbury, N.Y., for his outstanding contributions toward the advancement of multi-culturalism and historical education.

Please help support Mr. Garrison in his goal to raise a minimum of $1,000 for this important fundraiser.

Proceeds support the Native American Indian Alliance Historical Society's important programs and services!

Born in 1952, Elliot “Butch” A. Garrison grew up in the town of Oyster Bay where he learned of and embraced its rich history.  He attended school within the Oyster Bay School district receiving accolades for athleticism with special attention paid towards his prowess on the football field.  He went off to College to further his education and football career and upon graduating Hudson Valley Community College, secured a position within the NFL as a free agent linebacker with the NY Jets 1974.

From there, Elliot accepted employment within Nassau County Parks & Recreation and rose through the ranks to become the Director of The Mitchel Athletic Complex, Hempstead, NY.  This facility was consistently recognized for attaining the industry’s highest standards for operating a full service, multi-functional sports facility and recreational complex.  He Co-Directed $22 million renovation project of The Mitchel Athletic complex in preparation for the World Class ’98 Goodwill Games.  Planned and supervised construction of a 10,000 seat stadium, 8 multi-purpose athletic playing fields and administration building housed locker, training, equipment storage and meeting  rooms.

After his early retirement in 2000, Elliot went on to work with the NY Jets in the capacity of Operations/Security until they moved to New Jersey in 2003.  He’s currently employed with Cameron Engineering as a Field Inspector, supervising construction sites and working with various outside firms on projects, most recently with FEMA on the Hurricane Sandy recovery.

Passionate about football, Elliot has supported the sport that helped him in his own personal development.  Player and coach (Varsity teams @ Oyster Bay High School & Linebacker coach for Nassau Community College 1990-2000), he continues to encourage younger generations about the value of participating in organized team sports.

Community minded, he’s participated on various boards throughout the years, [i.e. Nassau County Youth Board, Mineola (1992-96); Youth & Family Counseling Agency, East Norwich/Oyster Bay (1998-2012); Athletes Helping Athletes, Inc. (1992-96); Oyster Bay High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Chairperson, 2006-present] and continues to give back to the town that has enriched his life.  His current focus is on the Pinehollow Cemetery Restoration Project.  This cemetery is the resting place of many Oyster Bay African American residents.  Elliot is working with others towards establishing historical status to this landmark which pays homage to veterans from every conflict as far back as the Civil War to present day.   His vision towards recognizing and preserving the past will bring light on the historical contributions of its citizens from this quiet North Shore community.

He and his wife, Cathy, reside in Huntington, NY.
