Below is a brief summary about Cheryl written in her own words:

My name is Cheryl "Shining Dove" Hendrickson and I am very honored to be a recipient of this award. I have always been interested in family and the connections between family groups/clans within my family structure. The family dynamics are very important and my husband and I have always expressed to our children that "Family comes first" before anything. This is one of the life lessons that my mother, the late Belma "Guiding Light” Sands had always instilled in my siblings and I as children. When joining the Montaukett Tribe of LI NY in 1997, I was afforded the opportunity to join the Genealogy Committee of the tribe to assist members in linking together their genealogy and confirming their Native American Indian ancestry and lineage. This was a wonderful opportunity because it allowed me to see how each branch of the family tree was intertwined and related with not only my family but others as well. What I had recognized but confirmed through the many supporting documents, that our family history is not only rich, but diverse, and surpasses the name of this very country that we live in  THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!

Through documented history, my family can trace their lineage back to the mid 1700's without a trace of slavery. I found this to be very exciting to know that my ancestors were here and greeted the Europeans when they came upon these very shores of Long Island. We assisted in showing them the waterways, the trails which are now considered major roads and even built some of the homes for the abolitionist who came to spread the gospel ministry. I am pleased that my efforts of hard work and dedication for progression of my people isn't going in vain. I hope that my children and grandchildren will pick up the torch that had been passed from my generation and others before. I have included the following milestones in my life:

  • BORN AND RAISED IN HUNTINGTON LI NY
  • I HAVE BEEN MARRIED 47 YRS TO MY HUSBAND “ALLAN STRONG ELK HENDRICKSON”
  • WE HAVE 3 SONS 1 DAUGHTER & 10 GRANDCHILDREN.
  • I HAVE BEEN INTERESTED IN MY FAMILIES HISTORY FROM THE TIME MY GRANDMOTHER HAZEL LYONS TOLD ME THAT HER GRANDFATHER HENRY CARLL WAS THE GRAND COACHMAN FOR THE JONES ESTATE IN COLD SPRING HARBOR LI NY OUR ANCESTRAL RECORDS ON LI SPANS FROM THE 1700's TO THIS PRESENT DAY
  • 1997 MEMBER OF THE MONTAUKETT TRIBE OF LI NY-SERVE ON THE GENEOLOGY COMMITTEE
  • MY GRANDCHILDREN ARE THE TENTH RECORDED GENERATION.
  • ·WE ARE THE PROUD DESCENDENTS OF LONG ISLAND LABORERS A MIDWIFE,CHURCH BUILDERS, PASTORS, HOSTLER, LAUDRESS AND SEA MEN THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF LONG ISLAND
