Honk! Jr. is the school version of the adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless fairytale, The Ugly Duckling, with music by George Stiles and book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe. Honk! (the original) won London’s 2000 Olivier Award for Best Musical, beating Mamma Mia! and The Lion King. Comic and heart-warming, it is a musical to “quack” about for both children and adults, who will appreciate not only its timeless themes of self-discovery and acceptance, but also its witty lyrics and tuneful score. The musical is so inspirational in its message of acceptance and tolerance that the Ministry of Education in Israel has made it compulsory viewing for school children.
HONK! Jr. follows Ugly (Miguel Molina, age 10) whose odd, gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors including his dad, Drake (Johan Lowe, age 12). Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry Cat (Alaina McClue, age 14), Ugly must find his way home, with only his loving mother Ida (Erica O’Neal, age 13) searching for him. Along his harrowing yet hilarious journey he not only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but also finds love and acceptance in all its forms. The cast, ages 9 to 17, includes Alexis Alexis, Rachel Bonura, Neiman Burrell, Jr., Tegan Cuthbert, Molly Gaffney, Sylvia Jones, Zion Lee, Isabella Miorana, Allie Norvell, Tyler Richardson, Mia Rodriguez, Lillian Villere and Eli Zitler.
